The Only Practical Way to Reach Imessouane
Imessouane is one of Morocco's most magical surf destinations — a small fishing village famous for its incredibly long right-hand wave in the bay. Surfers come from around the world to ride waves that can last over a minute.
But getting there? That's the challenge. Imessouane is 130 km north of Agadir Airport, tucked away on a remote stretch of coastline. There is no bus, no train, and no public transport from the airport. Even from Agadir city, buses to Imessouane are rare and unreliable.
A private transfer is the only stress-free option. Your driver meets you at Agadir Airport arrivals and takes you directly to Imessouane in about 2 hours via the scenic coastal and inland route. You'll arrive relaxed and ready to catch your first wave.
Why Imessouane Is Worth the Journey
Imessouane (pronounced "ee-mess-wahn") is divided into two surf zones:
- The Bay — the legendary long wave, ideal for longboarders and intermediate surfers. Rides can last 300+ meters in the right conditions. One of the longest waves in Africa.
- The Cathedral — a powerful beach break on the exposed side, for experienced shortboarders looking for more punch.
Beyond surfing, Imessouane offers a raw, uncommercialized Morocco experience. Fresh fish grilled on the harbor, sunset yoga on the cliffs, and a tight-knit community of surfers and fishermen. It's what Taghazout was 15 years ago.
Many travelers combine Imessouane with Taghazout or Tamraght — stay in Imessouane for the waves, then transfer south to the Taghazout area for a change of scenery. We can arrange multi-stop transfers along the coast.
The Route: Airport to Imessouane
The 130km drive takes approximately 2 hours and passes through varied landscapes:
First 45 minutes: Airport to the coastal highway, passing Aourir and the Taghazout area. If you want, your driver can make a brief stop here.
Middle section: The road climbs inland through argan tree forests and small Berber villages. This is the heartland of argan oil production — you might spot goats climbing argan trees!
Final approach: The road descends back to the coast as Imessouane comes into view — the dramatic bay, the fishing boats, and the long wall of whitewater stretching across the bay.
The road is paved all the way but winds through the hills. Our experienced drivers know every curve and will get you there safely and comfortably.
